Day 3 / March 19: SOUTH AREA (Waterfalls – Glacial Views – Black Sand Beaches) (B/L/D)
Drive along the south shore, an area of Iceland that is quite beautiful to view in the winter. This is one of the main farm regions of the country, and the road will pass by typical Icelandic farms, often with Icelandic horses in the fields. Stop at the spectacular waterfalls Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss. Head onwards, passing by Myrdalsjokull Glacier, to visit Reynisfjara beach. Take a walk on the black sands, admiring the extraordinary rock formations and thundering waves of the Atlantic Ocean. Overnight stay and Northern light hunt in Kirkjubaejarklaustur area.
Day 4 / March 20: SKAFTAFELL NATIONAL PARK – JOKULSARLON GLACIAL LAGOON
(Europe’s Largest National Park – Glacial Lagoon with Icebergs – Europe’s Largest Glacier) (B/L/D)
Today enter the area of Vatnajokull National Park, named after Europe’s largest glacier. This national park is also the largest one in Europe. The park’s Skaftafell region is a site of outstanding natural beauty, dominated by Vatnajokull glacier. Continue to Jokulsarlon Glacial Lagoon where you can enjoy a breathtaking sight of icebergs floating in the fantastic 180m (591 ft) deep glacial lagoon. Return to the hotel for dinner and overnight.
Day 5 / March 21: GOLDEN CIRCLE
(National Park with Geological Wonders (UNESCO) – Exploding Geysers – The Famous Golden Falls (B/L/-)
We begin to visit to the dramatic two-tiered Gullfoss waterfall, a spectacular sight in winter when frozen mid-cascade and then to the geothermal fields of Geysir with bubbling mud pools and the high-spouting Strokkur hot spring. Continue through farmland areas to Laugarvatn Fontana where your group experiences a geothermal bakery first-hand and digs up bread that has been cooked underground. Sample the delicious bread, served hot from the ground and slathered with fresh Icelandic butter. Onwards to Thingvellir National Park (UNESCO World Heritage site) where the world’s oldest parliament met for centuries on the shores of Iceland’s largest lake. Before we arrive back to Reykjavik.
Day 6 / March 22: JOURNEY INTO THE GLACIEL (B/L/-)
After nearly five years of study, planning, modelling, and careful preparation by top engineers, and advice from world renowned geo physicist with expert level knowledge of glaciers, we can now allow you to explore the Langjokull Ice Tunnel, located high on Europe’s second largest glacier! The Langjokull Ice tunnel is the world’s first and biggest man-made Ice Cap Glacier tunnel. This adventurous, once in a lifetime journey to the heart of an Ice Cap Glacier, starts with a bus ride to the area of Borgarfjordur. On the way to the edge of the glacier you’ll stop and witness natural phenomena such as Deildartunguhver, the largest hot spring area in Europe, and Hraunfossar Waterfalls, a series of waterfalls formed by rivulets streaming over a distance of about 900 metres out of a lava field. When you reach Langjokull glacier, it’s time to board a monster 8 wheel glacier truck to reach the entrance of the ice cave. During the excursion within the glacier itself you’ll see colours of blue you never knew existed, and learn how glaciers hide the secrets of history. After an approximately 50 minute visit within the glacier, it’s time to head back to Reykjavik.
Day 7 / March 23: REYKJAVIK SIGHTSEEING & BLUE LAGOON (B/L/-)
Start the day by visiting the recently opened and fascinating Northern Lights Centre in Reykjavik for an exciting and informative presentation on the Northern Lights. Reykjavík is the world’s most northerly capital, with more than one third of Iceland’s population. Today Reykjavík is a modern city with a variety of restaurants, museums, galleries, and theaters.
On our tour we cover the city from one end to the other. We will see the old town centre, the Parliament, the Cathedral, the harbour, the National Museum, the Pearl and Höfði house, the summit site of 1986.
We drive past the city’s salmon river, an indication for Reykjavík´s low pollution levels, and the Árbæjarsafn outdoor folk museum, which offers an interesting contrast to the modern buildings of the most recent part of Reykjavík. Drive continues past Reykjavik’s largest outdoor swimming pool in Laugardalur which is heated with water from natural hot springs under the city, the Ásmundur Sveinsson Sculpture museum and Hallgrímskirkja Church (whose steeple is a Reykjavík landmark).
After the sightseeing tour we drive to the Blue Lagoon. It is a unique experience; a lagoon with pleasantly warm mineral-rich geothermal water in a middle of a black lava field. The high natural levels of silica and minerals give the Lagoon its rich blue colour. The facilities include modern changing rooms and showers, an indoor geothermal pool, sauna, steam bath, masseuses, restaurants, and other services. A visit to the Blue Lagoon is invigorating whether one bathes there surrounded by snow in the middle of the winter or in the long summer daylight. You can grab a quick meal at the canteen or dine a-la-carte at the Lava Restaurant and then enjoy a relaxing drive back to Reykjavík.
Day 8 / March 24: DEPARTURE REYKJAVIK (B)
After breakfast, check-out at the hotel then head for a private transfer from your accommodation to Keflavik International Airport to end our trip.
