ITINERARY:

Day 1: Wed: Arrive Zagreb
Land in Zagreb where you will be met at the airport. Transfer to your hotel, settle in and relax. You may explore the city center a little on your own or rest after your journey. In the evening meet your tour director and fellow travelers for a welcome dinner. (D)

Day 2: Thu: Explore Zagreb
This morning enjoy a city tour featuring the historic Upper Town, which is set in the hills and where all the city’s religious, political and administrative power is located. Many of the buildings were restored following the devastating earthquake in 1880. See Zagreb Cathedral with its tall spires and elaborate decorations; the ancient St. Mark’s Church with its brightly-colored tile roof; and the Baroque St. Catherine’s Church, built on the site of an ancient Dominican church. Also see Ban’s Palace, named after a governor of Croatia and today houses the country’s presidency. Pass the Parliament Building, known as Sabor, which is the center of Croat politics today. The rest of the day is at leisure to explore the winding streets of the old town or take an optional tour to see the countryside. (B)

Day 3: Fri: Plitvice Lakes and Split
After breakfast depart Zagreb and travel through the countryside to Plitvice Lakes National Park. Enjoy the breathtaking scenery of this natural wonder where 16 terraced lakes are surrounded by thickly wooded mountains and lush vegetation. On arrival take a walking tour around several of the lower lakes to admire this scenic marvel and be sure to have your camera ready to capture the wonderful vistas. Drive south to the town of Split, a popular resort on the Adriatic Coast. Check in to your hotel and sit down to dinner with your fellow travelers. (B, D)

Day 4: Sat: Diocletian’s Palace and Ferry to Hvar Island
Today begins with a walking tour featuring the historic inner city, built around the Roman Emperor Diocletian’s Palace, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site and one of the largest and best preserved from the Roman Empire. Diocletian became emperor in 284 A.D. and moved to his palace in 305. See the Temple of Jupiter and the Cathedral of St. Domnius, converted into a Christian church from Diocletian’s mausoleum. Also see the Peristyle, the interior courtyard of the Roman complex with slender pillars. Nowadays you can see where the layers of centuries of building have piled one on top of the other. Spend some time browsing around on your own before boarding the ferry bound for Hvar Island. Check in to your hotel and enjoy dinner. (B, D)

Day 5: Sun: Explore Hvar Island
The charming island of Hvar offers gorgeous beaches, vineyards and gently rolling hills and has been voted one of the world’s 10 most beautiful islands by Conde Nast Travel magazine. The town of Hvar boasts a cultural and historical heritage dating back centuries. Enjoy a morning orientation walking tour through the medieval streets with lovely old stone houses and the central square which dates from the 13th century. See the Fortress at the top of the hill with walls that encompass parts of the city and also the 15th century Franciscan monastery with its elegant bell tower. In the afternoon relax in a shady square or a tiny beach or take a walk around the old streets to discover more of this magical place. Dine independently this evening and sample some of the local cuisine. (B)

Day 6: Mon: Coastal Drive to Dubrovnik
This morning take a ferry back to the mainland and drive along the spectacular Adriatic Coast. Be sure to have your camera ready to take some great shots of the scenery. Admire the natural beauty of the distant hills on one side and the sparkling blue waters of the sea, which is dotted with many islands, on the other. Enjoy the varied views as you pass traditional fishing villages, farming communities and idyllic resorts. On arrival in Dubrovnik, check in to your hotel and relax a little before dining with your fellow travelers. (B, D)

Day 7: Tue: Tour Dubrovnik
The old parts of Dubrovnik are completely encircled by the defensive walls that date from the 10th century. Take a walking tour through the center of the town to see the main points of interest in and around the Square of the Loggia. View Orlando’s Column, the Clock Tower and the Sponza Palace with its Renaissance loggia and Venetian Gothic windows above it. Visit the Rector’s Palace, which was the political and administrative center for centuries and also see the Dominican Monastery and Franciscan Monastery with its Pharmacy, dating back to 1317. The rest of the day is at leisure for further sightseeing, shopping and dining. (B)

Day 8: Wed: Excursion to Montenegro
Travel to the Republic of Montenegro. Head south towards the beautiful Bay of Kotor, the longest and deepest fjord in Southern Europe. Visit the city of Kotor and then take a boat ride to Our Lady of the Rocks, a large Roman Catholic church on an islet off the coast of Perast. Return to the mainland and stop in the charming coastal towns of Perast and Budva before returning to Dubrovnik where the evening is free. (B)

Day 9: Thu: Depart Dubrovnik for Home
After breakfast transfer to Dubrovnik Airport for your flight home. (B)
